The Journey Behind the Keys

The day has finally come.
I have been refreshing my email every few minutes, waiting for confirmation from lawyers and the other agent that the keys have been released. It’s not as simple as the keys, me opening the door for the very last time, or the pay cheque that will hit my account in a few days. It’s about the journey that got us here.
It’s the stories we have shared over months of home searching. I’ve learned so much about you: your likes and dislikes, your kids' names and birthdays, your hobbies and goals. We’ve navigated through hopefulness, heartache, apprehension, and excitement. We have become friends, the best of friends, over such a short period of time. You have shared with me deep parts of your life that have made this journey your why. I am deeply honoured that you shared with me your family, your life, your expectations, emotions, and the final, monumental step in our journey together: the keys.
Closing day is filled with excitement, hopefulness, and for me, a pang of sadness. We have connected every single day for months. Talked about home options; how houses would fit your life and your goals. Your goals. Your whys. We have shared disappointment when offers don’t come to fruition the way we wanted them to. We have pulled ourselves up, taken a deep breath, and told ourselves that the next one will be the one. We have learned together, grieved together, and moved forward together. That is the biggest sense of accomplishment for me. That you trusted me when I didn’t fully trust myself. YOU are the reason I do what I do. To see the smile on your face, the plans you’ve made for paint and renovations. When these keys are in your hands, we say our goodbyes with hugs and gifts. I know my part in this journey has come to an end. You are where you dreamed to be, and I am off to help the next person starting their journey. It feels similar to a breakup. What was once texts, emails, and calls every day or every few days, turns into quick check-ins, making sure you are well.
The house is now yours.
The keys are in your hands.
Your journey with me has come to a close.
All I can say, from the bottom of my heart, is thank you. Thank you for giving me your time, for getting to know you, and for being the reason closing days are always a little bittersweet.
